OneNote 07 shuts down instantly when I open it

U

udontquit

The error message I get is:

"Microsoft Office OneNote has encountered a problem and needs to close. The
information you were working on might be lost. Microsoft Office OneNote can
try to recover it for you."

It has a box I can check to recover the work and restart. However, once it
restarts I get the same thing all over again. I have uninstalled and
re-installed it with no change. I have downloaded all the current patches,
etc., but it stil does this. I have also Debugged it... no luck. Curiously,
in Outlook 07, when I select a group of Contacts to print, and Preview them
first, I get this very same message and problem. That's the only time I have
an issue with Outlook, though. Otherwise, I can run Outllook with no
problem. OneNote won't run at all without this error.

I have a similar problem since upgrading to Vista.

OneNote runs, then about 3 or 4 times an hour it just shuts itself down and
restarts. It doesn't seem to have a specific reason. Sometimes I am working
in it, other times it is just in another Window when it closes.

Anyone got any ideas how to figure this one out?
Thanks,
George

Hi Ben -

Thanks for responding. I ran Office Diagnostics on it when it first started
happening and just ran it again and both times all tests completed
successfully and no issues were found.

Not sure what the problem is but I'm not losing work, just disconcerting to
see a Window open telling me it has to close and it shuts down then it
reboots again by itself.

What should I try next? Reinstall OneNote?

Thanks,
George

Run a "Repair" (from the the lost if installed Software).
Should this not help, the uninstall an re-install.

I have done it all! I have run Repair on OneNote as well as Office 2007.
I have unistalled and re-installed OneNote several times. I have run
Diagnostics, and I have downloaded all updates and patches. No luck.
OneNote still shuts down immediately after I open it, giving me the
error message:

"Microsoft Office OneNote has encountered a problem and needs to close.
The information you were working on might be lost. Microsoft Office
OneNote can try to recover it for you."

By the way, I'm running Windows XP on an HP Tablet.
Any ideas?

Really strange.
I have no idea in what else to do except a new install of the OS from
scratch.

ON had always been running fine under XP TabletPC edition on my HP
tc1100.
And it works without a problem under Vista in this machine.

I think I have found the problem!!!!! A bug in my user profile
I created a new profile with administrator abilities and tried On
Note. It opened perfectly. Also Word now opens correctly too
The annoying thing is that there seemed to be nothing to tell me tha
there was a glitch in my profile. Everything I ran or checked came bac
ok.
I shall remember this trick if I get another similar problem as it i
easy to check for
Also very annoyed that the Word 2007 is not compatible with OE an
gives me spellchecker in FRENCH!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the feedback! Good to hear that things are fine now.

Where do you have problems with the spellchecker's language?
In Word or in OE?

The problem lies with OE6 not reading the directory for Word 2007. I di
not know there was a conflict as I already had Word 2003, so OE wa
using the directory for that version. Once I had to change my profil
and load just Word 2007, I discovered that OE6 does not understan
either the English, Spanish or German dictionary. Brilliant thinking o
someone's part!!!!!!
I see a post here from Recluseman that says we can get a fre
spellchecker for OE6 so I shall try that

Oh I see.
Yes, IE can not work with the proofing tools and dictionaries from
Office 2007.
A rather simple workaround to use an older Office CD (probably 2003
which you seem to have had).
Make a custom install and deselect everything except the proofing tools
and the languages you need.
Dong so does not do any harm to Office 2007.

this did happen but now I get this error: "OneNote is unable to start. This
may be caused by insufficient hard drive space or by insufficient write
permissions for OneNote's notebook cache files in your user settings folder.
Try to delete any unnecessary files from your computer and then try starting
OneNote again. If this message persists, contact your system adiministrator."
The only thing different was a win update pushed out by networking, nothing
else changed except the date on the calendar.

any ideas on how to fix this? (very annoying problem)

Are you running OneNote with Administrator access? Can another user account
with Administrator access be used to login and note whether the sam error
occurs in OneNote?

Which antivirus do you have installed?
