How exactly does digital ink and audio work together on onenote2003? And is
there a pen and ink, handheld device that is much smaller than a tablet pc,
about the size of a palm pilot on which I can download onenote 2003?

Thank you

You can (a) record audio and (b) import audio files.
On recording and on playback of audio-files one can write annotations
(keyboard and/or pen) and each new line written will behave like a
point one can jump to later.
Pls see Chris Pratley's article "OneNote for Audio and Video Notes":
http://blogs.msdn.com/chris_pratley/archive/2005/04/09/406783.aspx

You'll find step-by-step instructions in Kathy Jacob's book "Unleash
the Power of One Note"

The new UMPCs run OneNote. But I would urgently suggest to use ON 2007
(which is by far improved).

Can you add annotations (with links to the audio) after the fact in ON
03? I thought you could only do that in ON 07.

Did not try it in ON 03 (only had that for a very short time).
But I'm pretty sure that the feature was there already.
Chris Pratley's blog is from April 2005, so it refers to the old
version.

And I myself came across this issue due to a discussion in this NG on
annotating video during playback. And there the audio playback
technique called "loop" was mentioned as something which works
(contrary to do doing the same with video). And then I read through
Kathy Jacob's book. (unfortunately don't find it the moment).

P.S. The thread was "Annotating existing audio/video" by Daniel
Hawkins, starting July 25.

You can do the annotation in 2003, but it takes a little work. You have to
play the audio file back and use the playback as the input. If anyone wants
detailed instructions, post hear and I will try to draft them up. (Though, I
will admit this is MUCH easier in 2007 :) )

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for your input. It's been so helpful. I just wanted to
follow up on the UMPC device and a couple of other things:

1) Which brand of UMPC- AgoPC , Asus , Samsung , Founder , PaceBlade, or
Tablet Kiosk - records the best sound quality? And how close do I need to be
the speaker and quiet do our surroundings have to be for me to pick up clear
sound?
2) To get the pen & ink capability, do I have to purchase separately
Microsoft Touch Pad with my UMPC?
3) Before I purchase Microsoft OneNote2007, a UMPC, and possibly Microsoft
Touch Pad, is there anything else I should know/be aware of?

Many, many thanks

AFAICS this question would better be asked in the
"microsoft.public.windows.pocketpc" newsgroup.

What do you mean by that?
Never heard of such thing.

The UMPCs' screen is really small. So I doubt that it might be a
device for extensive note-taking. I'm reaching the limits already with
my TabletPC and it's 10.4" screen with 1024*768 resolution.

Depending on what you want to do (with notetaking and beyond) you
might consider alternatives, f.e.:
a) A TabletPC
b) A TabletPC + Smartphone or a PDA running under WM 5 (OneNote Mobile
runs on those; it has limited functionality, naturally).

If the main task would be taking audio notes, you might use a PDA or
an MP3 player with recording feature.

Prior to having a TabletPC I often did recordings with my iPAQ (on an
SD card and in MP3 format). The audio files can easily be imported
into OneNote and then annotated on playback. Works perfectly well.

I think that it might be of help for future questions.
If it would not mean too much work it would be nice if you could put a
short guide together (which would be well placed on your website).

Works really great there.
For demonstrating the power of ON (in my efforts to make proselytes
<bg>) I did put a song into my demo notebook with a scan of the CD
inlay and created "jump point" annotations for the verses and the
chorus.
And I show this to everyone getting near me.
Everybody is more than only amazed on the "audio playback steering
panel" <bg>.

1) My main task is to hand write with digital ink & record audio at the same
time, and want to see how I could do that most effectively with a handheld
device + onenote 2007. Would the UMPC suffice?

2) Also, I'm hoping to take one hour of notes + audio recording each time I
use my handheld + onenote and unload onto a lap top when I get home (the
reason why I wouldn't just take the lap top with me is because I'll sometimes
be standing or be outdoors while I'm taking notes). Would I be able to do
that with the UMPC?

Thank you
