IMHO if you just start working with ON, do for 2007.
Even if its still a beta, it works great.

There are very many new things and great new features wghich are also
important for the way how one works. So I think that one would better
get into the new product instead of trying to learn to know the old
one only to start learning again in a few months.

I agree. Give 2007 a shot and see how well it works. It might work well
on your computer, or you might have major issues. If you have major
issues, uninstall it and buy 2003. Note though that there is no special
upgrade price to 2007. No matter whether you are upgrading or getting it
new, ON 2007 will be around $100.

Although I should probably have said, if ON 2007 PLUS Windows Desktop
Search 3 beta ... Which is what I meant. ON 2007, if I can generalize from
reports I've read here, is basically sound and reliable. The only major
glitches (except for one that's well-publicized) I recall involved the
installation process, and someone posted a solution to most installation
woes: Simply delete everything in the registry containing 'OneNote.' You
will need a third party utility to find and delete hundreds of entries en
masse. (If such a blind and massive operation on the registry scares
anyone, my personal advice would be just be sure you have an uncorrupted
and uptodate backup of your entire disk. The near-universal cure for
software woes.)

So OneNote proper is stable enough that many companies would have released
it. WDS 3 beta, on the other hand, is only charitably termed 'beta.' My
personal experience and what I've been reading pegs it as a high alpha.
Besides often not installing, breaking down, taking over the cpu, and
functioning unreliably, the thing doesn't even have an interface yet. But
who would want to use OneNote without note flags. No WDS 3, no instant
search, but worse, no note flags.

Definitely not. ON Beta still has a lot of issues (read some posts by MS
people, blog comments, etc).

Would you have a link, please?

Google "Chris Pratley" and you should get to his blog on MSDN.

There are a number of nice improvements in OneNote 2007 Beta, but OneNote
2003, which I have used for two years, is pretty good as it is. I would not
use the 2007 Beta 2 at this stage - there are far too many bugs and problems
with it.
The two critical ones (at least on my systems, running under XP and the
Vista Beta) are that the file menu cannot be accessed (which makes many
things very difficult or impossible), the e-mail command doesn't work, and my
copy refuses to create new sections (maybe someone has the answers to these
problems).
If you plan to use the program for serious work and you need it now (and it
is a superbly thought out program) I would get the current OneNote. Indeed,
as I am writing this, I am removing the Beta 2 from my laptop and restoring
2003.

Should the above be modified to
"If you plan to use this and other programs for work do not follow the
idea of doing this under Vista"
????

Keep with ON 2007 but run it under OS which really *ready*, i.e. XP.

IMHO there is no use in blaming an application if the OS is jaust a
beta version.

Although having stumbled over a number of issues, I for one cannot
recommend to use the old stuff for a starter.
