OneNote 2003

G'day MVP's and other helpers

I have a question about using OneNote 2003 and hope this forum is ok to post
it. I have a Toshiba Tecra M2 running XP Pro SP2 an Office 2003 sp1
including OneNote 2003. Great application BTW. I have tried using the built
in mic while attending lectures and taking notes in OneNote but the playback
is quite muffled and not very loud even when all volume controls and the
extyernal volume control is turned up. I realize that the issue might be
related tot he built in mic whcih is at the top of the screen, facing me and
away from the lecturer. I went into tools options in OneNote and under
Audio and Video I see a number of pull down options under audio. The device
is set to default although there is also SoundMax Digital Audio. The codec
is set for Windows Media Audio 9.1 (I have recently downloaded WM 10.0) and
my format is set to 8 kbps, 8 kHz, mono CBR. There are at least 70 different
configurations the choose from in the Format drop down, four in th ecodec and
two in Device. I'm no mathmetician but that seems like a heck of a lot of
combinations to try. now for the question! Can any of the options enhance
the playback quality using the built in mic? I thought I would ask before
randomly trying different format codec and device combinations or before
buying an external mic which may not be necessary if I set things up
properly. Thank you for past help and checking this one. I hope this forum
is appropriate or someone can direct me accordingly.
Cheers
Eddie

The built-in mic is ok for use by yourself or anybody sitting in front of
it.. if you want to record at lectures, you will need to get yourself a
better mic that is less directional than the laptop offering.. with
microphones, you get what you pay for..

Cheers Mike, I'll bear that in mind when I look to what's available. What is
the effect/purpose of the different format settings for in
tools/options/audio and video/audio?

Essentially, they relate to quality of sound in playback (?), but you have
to understand that higher quality sound results in large audio files.. below
is an extract from OneNote FAQ

Q. How much space do the audio notes require on my hard disk?

A. The audio notes are compressed .wma files. The size of each audio file
depends on the length of the recording as well as the codec and format of
the audio recording. To customize, click Options on the Tools menu, click
Audio Notebook, and then click Codec or Format. For example, an hour of
audio recording in .WMA V8, 16 kilobytes per second (kBps), 16 kilohertz
(kHz), mono format is approximately 7 megabytes.

Re. Microphones

Q. Do I need an external microphone or other hardware to record linked
audio notes?

A. The OneNote team has tested a variety of portable computers and found
that the built-in microphones for each computer vary greatly. Generally, the
built-in microphone works well for recording your own voice or a small
meeting of two or three people. However, the OneNote team recommends an
external microphone for best results, especially in larger meetings or when
recording presentations or lectures.
