OneNote 2007 beta 2 crashes on startup

W

Wes Perdue

I am getting a "send error report" crash when I try to start OneNote 2007
beta 2 on Win XP Pro SP2. I did send the error report. At one point, I got
alink to this supprt web page:

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=ad8d31ea-7db2-432e-970c-e0fe777c7459&SID=2052

It says there's a beta update that's available and gives a link, but the
link only leads to the test drive site. If I click on the check for updates
link on that page, I get taken to Microsoft Update, and the only update
available is IE7, which I'm declining for now.

Might IE 7 help, or is there a beta update I can download?

Thanks,
Wes

How can I tell when I can't start the application? Add/remove programs
doesn't say, and the installer is named OneNote-2007-beta2-EN.EXE; I
downloaded it on 10/10.

I looked in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\OneNote and
din't find anything. I can't even find a binary in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE12\OneNote. There are four DLLs there; they
have the file version: 12.3.4017.1003

Does that answer your question?

Thanks,
Wes

You are running beta 2. There is patch available called B2TR. See the
link to it after my name.

Thanks! Beta 2 TR helped; OneNote starts up correctly now.
However, the QuickLaunch is now broken. It seems to silently fail
when started. This means I can't create Side Notes with Win+N.
This is not the end of the world, but it was a feature I used
regularly.

Check your Autostart folder.
There was a bug at least in the German version (cannot say for the
English version).
When in Tools | Options showing the icon is activated, a LNK-file is
copied into Autostart-folder.
B2TR did this with a file name which was seriously kaput (ways too
long and the file-extension missing).

So check for the file and if it does not have the file-extension LNK,
edit the filename and add the LNK extension.
On next boot NOTEM.exe will be firing and placing the ON-icon in the
TaskTray ;-)

Rainald,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the issue I'm
experiencing. I've got a shortcut in my "C:\Documents and Settings\wes\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup" folder that runs the following command:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE12\ONENOTEM.EXE" /tsr

When I run ONENOTEM.EXE manually without any options, I get a sidenote; but
when I run the above command, nothing seems to happen.

Wes

Is the OneNote icon in the tray, but maybe in the part that is hidden
automatically? If it is, right-click it and see the options there. Maybe
the keyboard shortcut is changed?

Yes, this link does nothing when clicked manaully.
Obviously it only fires on system start-up.

Patrick,

The icon is not hidden in the tray. Can you tell me the name of the
process, so I can check for it in the task manager process list?

Can you tell me how to check the keyboard shortcut configuration in the UI?
I couldn't find it within OneNote. I checked through tools -> options.

Thanks,
Wes
