rkato

Hi all I get this message when trying to save my one note on my ftp server

This error message is usually associated with an attempt to access an FTP
(File Transfer Protocol) web site through a fire wall/proxy server and the
proxy settings are not set correctly to gain access.
To avoid this error message, change the FTP proxy settings to allow access
to the site.
More information about this error message online.

Hi, Ben:

I am the remote administrator for Robert's site. We have set up an ftp
server for our purposes on Solaris 10. Windows can log in to the ftp site,
but OneNote has a problem in accessing these files. We can save to our hard
drives but OneNote cannot open them. Is this a port error on OneNote's part?

Working directly against an FTP server in OneNote (and quite likely some
other apps) is not going to work I'm afraid. To give a little detail. Not
all file systems and remote file system protocols are created equal (we
wish! it would make our lives much easier).

When windows is talking to the FTP site (from explorer) it's doing a very
simple transfer of whole file contents, not much sophistication in it. When
OneNote talks to files, for efficiencies sake, we do things like just
updating the range of bytes we need to modify so we don't need to transfer
the bytes for the entire file again. We also take things like write locks
that allow others to read while we're writing (for sharing), and more
specifically we take write locks on ranges of bytes in the file. There's
lots more to this but you get the idea. When apps work with files it's not a
just a simple one time full file transfer. Unfortunately FTP supports none
of these things.

If you have a WebDAV server that supports file locks (this is available in
Windows Server 2003 and you can enable it, it's not on by default I think)
we will work with that over HTTP. Also you can use Sharepoint if you want to
enable that scenario over HTTP. Regular windows file shares are the best of
all, but typically not available through firewalls if that's what you're
trying to achieve.
