OneNote cannot sync this notebook.

Hi,

I am using OneNote 2007 and trying to open a notebook on a Sharepoint
server. I am getting the following error message when it tries to sync.

OneNote cannot sync this notebook. An error occurred while communicating
with the Web Server where the notebook is stored. (Error code: 0xE000076C)

I can open up individual documents in the notebook without a problem, but I
cannot open the notebook. I can even save and create new notebooks on the
server, however, if I create a new notebook, I still get the above error
message and cannot see all of the documents in the notebook. I have to open
them individually outside of a notebook.

Any ideas on how to fix this or what the problem is?

Thanks.

This error is typically caused by misconfigured servers. Could you tell
us more about the server configuration? Is it the default config, or
customized (if so, in what ways?)? What OS is the server running on? Are
you using SSL/authentication?
If this is a server run by a commercial hosting company, which company?

This is my server, and I am working on the problem. This server is a
Sharepoint 3.0 / Windows SBS 2003 R2. The sharepoint server, to my
estimation is configured correctly. It is published and has ssl connections.
Vista computers running OneNote 2007 are connecting to the
sharepoint/OneNote notebook and syncing flawlessly. Onenote installed on XP
pro and mediacenter machines are having problems. Sharepoint services are
updated to sp3. Exchange 2003 / OWA is also installed in this config with
RPC over Http. My ssl configuration is working well and my selfmade
certificates are also working with every other aspect of the server. I am
receiving no errors server side and the only error showing is the one stated
by jon above. I also run an ISA 2004 firewall and have been monitoring the
connections. The firewall is not blocking anything during the connection.

Please help.

Thanks

Sounds mostly like it should work. The only thing that jumps out is the
self-signed cert used for SSL. OneNote can sometimes run into problems
with self-signed certs due to the fact that OneNote syncs in the
background, and self-signed certs sometimes cannot be accepted without
showing various dialogs. Could you try installing the certificate that
was used to sign the SSL certificates you're using as a trusted root
certificate on the client machines? That should enable OneNote to accept
the SSL certificates without user confirmation. Also, make sure that
you're putting https:// (note the S) in the path when opening the notebooks.
If that doesn't work, could you try opening the notebooks over a plain,
non-SSL connection, just so we can verify that everything else is working?

Thanks for answering!! I have tried this. I installed the certificate on
the client as trusted. The cert works for outlook,
oma(activesync),owa, remote workspace and onenote (Vista). I also set the
website as trusted in IE security to allow for any activeX that I am not
aware of. One xp machine is internal to the firewall the onenote works
flawlessly from the non-secure http perspective. I know that I can have it
work through a VPN, but as we build utility I do not want to open up my
internal network (more specifically, I don't want a bunch of VPN tunnels to
manage.)

One thing comes to mind: I noticed that onenote allows a port to be
configured for sync. I am going to pick the port and open that port on the
firewall to see if somehow the firewall is blocking. To be honest, I don't
believe thats the problem or Vista would be having the same problem. To be
honest, I would have expected Vista to be having the problems here. Not the
XP machine. This is very confusing....

Thanks

A lot of underlying low-level code changed between XP and Vista, so in a
sense, it's not really surprising that one works and the other doesn't.
Unfortunately, since the error happens so early in the process, it's
hard to say what could be the problem without sitting down with a
debugger in front of OneNote. My advice is to either try playing around
with the ssl/authentication settings to see if there's something that
might be changed to make it work, or upgrade the client machines to
Vista, since that seems to be working.

The description for Event ID ( 8214 ) in Source ( Windows SharePoint Services 3 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: A request was made for a URL, https://onenoteserver.domain.com, which has not been configured in Alternate Access Mappings. Some links may point to the Alternate Access URL for the default zone, http://pub-server. Review the Alternate Access mappings for this Web application at http://pub-server:34683/_admin/AlternateUrlCollections.aspx and consider adding https://onenoteserver.domain.com as a Public Alternate Access URL if it will be used frequently. Help on this error:

I went to the URL (http://pub-server:34683/_admin/AlternateUrlCollections.aspx) and I configured my "Sharepoint - 80" zone to have an alternate internet mapping of "https://onenoteserver.domain.com". This resolved all issues I had with syncing and creating notebooks. Clearing the cache did not help.

Sorry, Rob,
the way you posted here in reply to some oooooold thread (not on the
MS-newserver anymore <!>) you leave this automatically produced new
thread behind as a total riddle.

I for one can not understand at all what you want to say {siiigh}.

Are you literally trying to use the server "domain.com"? Or did you change
the URL when you pasted?

Almost certainly this is a configuration of the server error. OneNote
cannot reach whatever server you are trying to use - either it is not there
or not responding. Can you reach the server with a browser?

I'd contact the server admin to see what needs to be done if so.
