What do you think of the OneNote Guide?

1) What is your overall impression - was it useful?
2) Is it easy and fun to read?
3) Did you understand everything?
4) Anything else they would like covered in the Guide?
5) Any other gripes or suggestions?

Please let us know...

Thank you!

As a heavy user of OneNote 2003 I found the new Guide in 2007 very
useful. I was able to quickly find the new features I was interested
in (hyperlinking, image OCR, multiple notebooks) and learn how to
operate them. From that point, I decided to read the whole thing to
see more stuff I hadn't heard about, which turned out to be very
useful. I hadn't been familiar with the Outlook integration, which
just makes Onenote even more productive for me--I'm really so pleased
about the Task integration. Whether people new to OneNote will have a
similar experience with the guide, I don't know.

Here's one gripe though--The interface for the multiple notebooks (the
bar on the left side of the screen) takes up too much screen real
estate, especially on a 12" tablet screen running at 1024x768. Adding
a way to undock or minimize this would be great. Even better would be
a return to the 2003 navigation interface--I really like the standard
drill down menu structure.

thanks,
Derek

That's the precise reason I can't wait to get 2007.

I hate the drill down menu structure :)) I find it clumsy, slow and
unintuitive even though I'm an experienced Windows Explorer user.

Each to his own :)

Have not read it yet, just started looking at 2007, but did try the screen
capture hotkey windows logo + s. Oops, the # 4. Gather Screen Clippings page
needs a note in the instructions that the OneNote tray icon has to be
started. All I ended up doing was inserting an s into doc I was trying to
capture. (Eventually did find out had to start tray icon from searching Help
online, but note in instructions would help.)

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I see that the NavPane can be expanded or
collapsed. However, what I'd like to see is an option to minimize or
remove the NavPane altogether, similar perhaps to the way the task bar
in windows can be minimized off screen and brought back when the mouse
is moved to the bottom of the screen.

Hi Derek,

You can switch off the NavPane completey by using View, Navigation Pane,
Off. There you can see that the shortcut to do this is ALT-F1.

Aloha (e-mail address removed),

The navigation pane on the left side is collapsable. Click the double-left-chevron
at the top of the NavPane.

I don't know what version of the beta you are using but this is not
available in the version I downloaded. First, it is called a Navigation
Bar in both the program itself and in the the Guide. Second, there is no
mention of Navigation anything in the view menu. Third, Pressing Alt + F1
just expands and contracts the Navigation Bar. It does not make it go
away.

Oh my....My fault. I read navigation pane and thought you were referring
to Outlook. My instructions were for Outlook.
For OneNote, I don't think you can switch it off. You can place it left
or right though.
Sorry for the confusion,

What do you think of the OneNote Guide?

I liked the guide. I wished there were a bit more though. I felt some of
the pictures were a little deceptive. The picture looks as if it is just
a couple of screen shots stuck into OneNote with some of the new arrows
added in. However, it turned out that the whole collection of images was
actually one picture SIMULATING what could supposedly be done in OneNote.
It looks great in a demo but it hides bugs that would show up if the
pictures and arrows were separate entities.

I liked the additional guides that are in the templates section. However,
I didn't feel like creating all the additional pages necessary to be able
to view the contents of those templates. Not too much space, just too
much work. Plus, I don't really like the idea of all those "templates"
cluttering up my real list of templates. I would rather that they were
just in another section. It makes them easier to find and easier to get
rid of when I am finished with them.
