oneNote saved files

It used to be that while I was in windows explorer that I could right click ,
click new, and then click oneNote to create a oneNote document in that
directory. OneNote nolonger is one of the options in windows explorer.

The down side of this is that when I start a file say on a jump drive and
then copy it over to a directory that is on my hard drive I am never sure
what is going to save or not. yesterday I lost files. it appeared to have
to do with putting files in synch. If that is true what it did was to save
only the contents of the smaller file on on the jump drive and at the same
time did not save the new contents I had added to that file on the hard drive.

How can I
1. get windows explorer to allow me to create files in the directory I want
to be in at the start.

2. prevent this loss of data as I copy one files from one directory to
another.

3. find out where these deleted files are. in a backup folder? They are
not in the recycle bin.

Please explain the synchronization that is possible here. I definitely want
to turn off that option.

thanks.

Sinceely,
MM

My file appeared today as a displaced section of a notebook along with one other.
Perhaps looking under displaced in the help will help. I am just happy I
found the file.

You didn't mention which version of OneNote you're using so I'll assume
2007. The issue is that OneNote 2007 kicks into "sync mode" when working
with removable devices. That is, when you open a .one section or notebook
that exists on a USB drive or network share, OneNote doesn't work with the
file directly. Instead, it works with a local cache and merges the changes
into the real file periodically. You can even pop the USB drive out and
OneNote will continue to work offline from the cache and merge in your
changes when you put it back. So basically, just keep the notebooks on the
USB drive and don't move it to your desktop or other computer. Just *open*
it from the USB drive from within OneNote and let it take care of the rest.

I had a reply to my question which might help you. Part of the answer is in
the help menu under sync. see 2] below

Turn off automatic notebook synchronization
Automatic synchronization of shared notebooks is turned on by default. If
you do not want others to see the changes that you make to shared notebooks
until you are finished editing them (for example, while you are still
checking facts), you can disable automatic synchronization.

Open the shared notebook for which you want to disable automatic
synchronization between your computer and the shared notebook file.
On the File menu, point to Sync, and then click Work Offline.

I hope that helped you.
