OneNote should have password protection on folders

If you want to password protect all the sections within a folder, you
currently have to protect each one individually - it should be possible to
protect all sections within a folder with one single password

Maybe that would be a feature for a future version.

Keep in mind that the password protection data is stored in the section file
and some reworking would be necessary to have it expand beyond that object.

Some workarounds:
1) Use NTFS permissions and/or EFS (both of which require that your hard
drive be formatted as NTFS) to protect the *.One files. Permissions and the
Encryption bit can be set on a folder via the Explorer UI (which behind the
scenes applies those properties to each individual file anyway).
2) Set a password for each section. This might take some additional time to
initially set up, but once the sections have been protected, you can lock
them all in one step by pressing Ctrl-Alt-L. The effort to initially set a
password on each section would only have to be spent once.

Very much agree. Particularly disagreeable aspect of this is that sections
remain unsearchable while they're locked. If I have to unlock every section
before I search for something I may as well search for it manually.

Would sort of defeat the purpose to let somebody search password protected
sections without putting in the password, though, wouldn't it?

Maybe an 'unlock all' feature would help this. I think this has been
suggested elsewhere.

Yes, though that would require you to use the same password on all sections
you want to be able to open that way. Otherwise it'll have to prompt you
for each password.
