OneNote Sync and Flash Drive problem - missing data

Hello.

I really like using OneNote. But, I think I am having a problem with the
auto sync feature.

I have a Dell laptop. When I boot up, I plug in a flash drive, which I use
for backup purposes.

I think what is happening is that, OneNote is updating my laptop's hard
drive with what is on the flash drive. I say this because, lately, I've
noticed that some data that I enter is gone from a OneNote page when I return
from a lunch or boot up in the morning.

Am I crazy or am I just missing something?

After reading the Help pages and looking at the Sync window, for now, I
opened the sync window and disconnected my flash drive from the sync process
path.
It shows my F: drive/flash drive as the "Notebook Location". But, it only
showed one of my three notebooks on the path. And, that is the notebook from
which I recently noticed data missing.

I normally drag files over to my flash drive from my laptop's hard drive
before lunch and at the end of the day. (I don't work in an office. I work on
my own.) So, I do a manual backup of files to my flash drive regularly.

1. So, am I interpreting what is going on correctly?
Is OneNote updating my laptop with what is on my flash drive?

2. Is there a way I can set up OneNote to use my laptop's hard drive as the
main file and backup/synch to my flash drive?

3. And, why does my synch window only show the one notebook?

OneNote users:

I found an answer to this.

If you go to your Notebook tabs on the right side and right-click on them,
there is a Properties menu selection.

If you choose it, the little window that opens shows the path to the
location of the Notebook that you are using to sync.

Mine was set to my F: drive / flash drive for the notebook that was losing
data.
My laptop's hard drive wasn't set to this.
When I set my C: drive to this path, things worked correctly.

I am not sure how this location value pointed to the F: drive / flash drive.
I must have set it somehow. But, all appears to be well in OneNoteLand on my
computer now.

I hope that this is helpful to someone out there.

This means that at certain time (and possibly per accident) you opened
the notebook from the stick, not the HDD.
My laptop's hard drive wasn't set to this.
When I set my C: drive to this path, things worked correctly.

But this means that the feature of automatic synching is disabled for
all of the notebooks now.

AFAICS you did not *set* anything. You just *opened* the notebook from
the stick instead of your standard storage pace on the HDD.
But, all appears to be well in OneNoteLand on my computer now.

Well, things work. I'm not sure that the work the optimal way.
For more details pls see my reply to the original posting.

Rather the latter <gbg>.

It seems that you mixed some of the major issues of working with
synching and using a USB stick with ON.
After reading the Help pages and looking at the Sync window, for
now, I opened the sync window and disconnected my flash drive from
the sync process path.
It shows my F: drive/flash drive as the "Notebook Location".

This means that you had opened the notebook-file in ON from the *stick*,
not from the local HDD.
But,
it only showed one of my three notebooks on the path. And, that is
the notebook from which I recently noticed data missing.

So it seems that you might have opened the other 2 notebooks not from
the sticks but from some local storage place.
I normally drag files over to my flash drive from my laptop's hard
drive before lunch and at the end of the day. (I don't work in an
office. I work on my own.) So, I do a manual backup of files to my
flash drive regularly.

And this is a basically wrong concept which spoils everything!!
Things have to be done in a totally different way (pls see below B.)
1. So, am I interpreting what is going on correctly?
Is OneNote updating my laptop with what is on my flash drive?

No. Not the way you obviously have been doing things (except the one
notebook).
2. Is there a way I can set up OneNote to use my laptop's hard
drive as the main file and backup/synch to my flash drive?

Not this way. Pls see below.
3. And, why does my synch window only show the one notebook?

Simply because this one notebook was opened from the stick and by this
set up for the synching feature. And by dragging files from the HDD to
the stick you even spoilt things for this one notebook.

B.
There are different ways of using a USB stick with ON.

(a) One can keep all of the data files on the HDD and use the USB stick
just as a backup medium.
This way the usage of the notebooks is limited to just the one computer
holding the data files.
And there is no synching available.

(b) A totally different way of working is to use USB stick as the
storage place for the data files.
Then no notebook files are stored on the computer.
The notebooks are opened from the stick instead and ON works from it's
cache.
This way data on the computer are synched *automatically* with the data
on the stick.

Going this way, one can use the notebooks on as many other computers
running with ON as one likes. Synching will always work.

Pls read David Rasmussen's great article:
"OneNote Notebooks on USB drives and SD cards"

Then come back and ask your additional questions.
