OneNote to Word

I have the service pack installed, but when I go to the send to tab (to send
my notes to word), there isn't anything there. I tried to redownload the
service pack, but it just says I already have it installed. Since I can't
uninstall it, what can I do to get (back) the ability to send notes to word.

I want to do this because I am so frustrated with onenotes limited ability
in printing pages. There needs to be a ruler toolbar or something. It doesn't
let you (that I can find) set it so that all of the note boxes (pages) are
preset to extend to the entire print margins. The note boxes on the pages are
automatically more narrow than a typical printing page (and I am looking for
..5 inch margins, anyway) and there just isn't a practical way to adjust them
all to be the exact size I want them to be.

Any insight?

Do you have Word 2003? If not, that's why the Send to Word feature isn't
showing. If you do have Word 2003, then the next thing I would try is
re-booting the computer.

Well, I assumed I had the most current version of word since I have MS XP,
but apparently I have word 2002 (apparently that's the version that comes
with XP?) So, I'm guessing there's no way to update the version or get around
it?

Does it matter that I can't send to anywhere? My send to box is totally blank.

If you upgrade to Office 2003 that will upgrade your Word to 2003 and
enable the feature. Available at all fine computer stores or through
online sources like Amazon.com or CDW.COM.

Is there a reason that the feature wasn't made available to Office XP (or
earlier) too?

Hopefully forcing upgrade purchases of Office wasn't a factor though this
seems to be an increasing trend amongst software manufacturers.

Word 2002 (or the Office XP family of products) came onto the market way
before OneNote - perhaps a year or so. Even on a Tablet PC, the Office XP
products are not aware of Ink without a Tablet PC XP Pack add-on. Progress
is made with new programs, and the older programs aren't necessarily aware
of the advances.

I accept that newer software will not necessarily be backwards-compatible
for all features and that older software sometimes requires a plug-in
(converter) to talk to newer software.

However, is OneNote really that far advanced that it cannot (or will not)
talk to Word XP?

Yes. They could probably write a converter that would allow them to talk,
but frankly they have MUCH bigger priorities and, in my opinion, there
isn't that much Word XP out there anyhow.

I'm not privy to the sales numbers but I'd bet there is a lot of Word 2000
and a lot of Word 2003. That's what I see in the field mostly.

Well it's all relative I suppose. What's a "MUCH bigger priority" to MS is a
showstopper for others (BTW, I'm a happy ON user).

I'm just surprised to learn that a converter is required at all.
So, to "Send To Word", ON is using architecture in Word 2003 that is not
available in Word 2002?

Most workplaces I've experienced Down Under have a mix of Word 2000, 2002
and 2003 running simultaneously on LANs.

It's a nuisance that ON can run on all these computers but only those with
Word 2003 can "Send To".

Thanks for the input anyway, Ben.

Yes, there are some key API differences. It's not that creating that
capability for Word 2002 is impossible, simply that doing so would
consume developer resources that are currently allocated at features
which are deemed more important or that will impact more users.

Remember that OneNote is still really early in its life-cycle
(essentially version 1.5 is what is publicly available) and by the time
it reaches a point where it's fairly mature Word 2002 will be even less
prevalent than it is today.

Understood. There are some workarounds involving the clipboard and such
but nothing quite so elegant.
