OneNote Trial Activiation Problem

A user has downloaded and installed a OneNote trial version on his XP Pro
SP2 computer.

The trial has now has expired.

When we go to Help > Activate, we get the wizard page with the Convert
button. When we click the Convert button we briefly see a little "please
wait"-type dialog box, which then disappears. After this happens the
following event appears in the event log:

Product: Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 -- Installation failed.

The user is a local administrator and so am I. When I log in and try to
activate I get the same repeatable scenario.

The computer has Office 2003 Pro installed.

The computer is pointed to a WSUS server for updates.

The computer has the Windows Firewall enabled and Trend OfficeScan
installed.

Has anybody seen or experienced this? Can anyone suggest some steps I can
take to get this user's copy activated without wiping out all his work?

The user tried this over the weekend but reported back that it did not work.
I tried running the install from the product CD but got an error message
that the source files were unavailable. I tried downloading the trial and
reinstalling it myself, but got a similar message that the source files were
unavailable.

This may be relevant: both this user and another one who downloaded and
installed the OneNote trial now get sent to this page when they try to
install updates from the Office Web site:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX010404541033.aspx

The other OneNote trial user was able to convert her product.

Do you have any suggestions for users who cannot resolve the activation
problem by reinstalling the trial?

I think we've got this taken care of. I decided to treat the OneNote
activation problem as a symptom of the Office Web site problem (see below).
I went through the steps detailed in Q304498 and only got the Office update
site to work when I used the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to remove
Office 2003 from Add/Remove Programs. After I reran the Office install, I
was able to update from the Office update Web site.

Next, I used the CleanUp Utility to remove OneNote trial from Add/Remove
Programs. I reinstalled from the full version CD and entered a valid product
key. I was able to activate the OneNote product and restore full
functionality without losing any of the user's customizations or data.
