Ongong problem in Word

R

Ron Wilcox

I have a problem which has been ongoing for months and I
believe this problem is related to WORD.

When I go to MY DOCUMENTS file and open a folder or
document, something strange happens when I close (X) the
file. Another distorted version of the foldor/document
name appears in MY DOCUMENTS. Is is always the same as
the file name that I just opened and then closed, but the
first two file name digits are replaced by ~$.

For example, whenever I open and then close a file
named "Personal", another (2nd) distorted version ot
Personal appears as ~$ersonal. Then things get locked up
and weird messages come up unless I first delete
~$ersonal. When I delete the ~$ versions, the go directly
to my Recycle Bin and store up until deleted from the
bin.I hope I have not confused you; any suggestions?

thank you

The file you are seeing is the "owner" file that's created whenever you open
a document in Word. It keeps anyone else from opening the file for editing
while you're using it. See "WD: How Word for Windows Uses Temporary Files
[KB 211632]" for more http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632. Ordinarily
the owner files are deleted when a document is closed, but this will not
happen if Word hangs or the system crashes. For information on getting rid
of the owner files, see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/LockedFiles.htm or
