Online Office Update checks Office XP SP-1 for Office 2000 products

SN Janin

When I go to the Office Online Office Update it checks off that I should
install Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1) for Office 2000 programs.
The OS is XP Home. When I open the individual programs (Excel,
Powerpoint, Word, etc.) they all indicate that they are Office 2000
programs. When I check them in System Information, Office 10
Applications, they are listed at Office 2002 programs. Should I
download the Office XP Service Pack 1 or the updates for Office 2000
products? TIA. SJ

Do you have any Office XP programs on your computer? Look under Control
Panel, Add/Remove programs to check. Sometimes Publisher or Visio is the
later version.

It is asking to update the Publisher installation. Go ahead and install the
Office XP patches.

Thank you. Will this also update the Office 2000 programs or will I
still have to update them with the Office 2000 updates? Did installing
Publisher 2002 cause the Office 2000 programs to 'become' Office 2002
programs? Sorry for all the questions, but I just finished a complete
restore of my computer! Thanks again. SJ

Hi S.J.,

The Office 2000 and Office XP/2002 app updates are
separate. Office 2000 may be using some updated
versions from the 2002 app that are common to both
but no, adding Publisher 2002 did not upgrade
your Office 2000 apps, it just means you have versions
from two different Office product generations installed.

Would it make any sense to install the update to Publisher 2002
separately? It's available on the Microsoft website. But, if I install
the Office XP Service Pack 1, will it only update Publisher 2002? Then
will I be able to install the Office 2000 updates? I find this a bit
confusing as you can tell. Thank you for your help. SJ

Hi S.J.,

Yes, it can get confusing. The Publisher 2002
update and the Office XP Service Pack have different
content. The Publisher 2002 update adds the ability
to create web pages using Filtered (leaner) HTML.
The Service Pack updates the Core Office files that
are common to each of the 2002 series apps, including
MS Publisher 2002.
