Only certain characters needed...

I'm using Word 2002 and have VB code that someone wrote to add a footer to
the document. I need to add something but am not a programmer. The field is
called Customer Description and the data is listed as last name, underscore,
first name, e.g., Doe_John.

I need to pull the first letter of the first name and the first letter of
the last name so I end up with JD. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in
advance.

Field? What sort of field?

Data? Where is the data coming from?

Would this be a mailmerge document? You can't merge parts of fields. If a
merge, you would be better served resolving the required data in the data
source.

It may be possible to extract the data from the merge document after the
merge, but we would need to know exactly where in the document it appeared
so that the macro copul;d locate and select it - and does it actually appear
in the document as Doe_John?

Where and when is the VB code used?

Can you post the code?
