Opeining Word Document Problem

I moved some Word documents while in Dos. I reinstalled Windows. When I
moved the Word documents the filenames got changed becasue they were too
long.

Now I go to open the files using Word and I get a bunch of characters that
do not make sense.

Any ideas? A small sample of the text I am seeing is below:

The files are corrupt. Restore the files from your backups. If you didn't
back up then you've paid the ultimate price -- there's not a lot you can do
now the files are corrupt.
