Open a file on CD

I have many CD's with files in excel and cannot open the
files. The message is: "file format is not valid". What
do I need to do to open these files in excel?

First copy them to your hard drive and then try to open these copies. Does
this work?

NEVER work directly to/from any kind of removable media.
