Open a .pdf in a new window

Good day all...little new to the whole website design and am having some
issues with a .pdf file opening in a new window instead of the existing
window. I haven't published the website as yet, just getting some of the
bugs out first. Any help would be much appreciated...

David,

Isn't opening a pdf file in a new browser window a function of the pdf
reader? Seems it is with PDF-Viewer, the one I use.

Hi Don,

I haven't used your viewer, but with the Adobe Reader and the one I use now,
FoxIt Reader, they both have a browser plug in or add on. This means that if
you click on a link to a PDF file from a web page the pdf file automatically
opens in that browser window. You don't get the option to save the file to
your computer by simply clicking the link, as you would for a Publisher
file, or a zip file for example, which do not have a browser plug in. So my
thinking was that you can write the link to the pdf file such that it will
open in a new window using the methods we discuss regularly here in the
group...upload the pdf file to a download folder, write the link to that
folder, and then modify that link so it opens in a new window.

Are you saying that you can set the options in PDF-Viewer to open a pdf file
in a new window automatically? I don't think you have that option with the
Adobe Reader or FoxIt. Or did I totally miss your point?

During the install of PDF-Viewer you can check a box to have files open in
the browser. And after opening the file you can, if wanted save the pdf
file.

OK, so you are saying that while you do have the option of installing the
pdf plugin, you don't have the option of setting it to open in a new window,
correct? In that case you would have to modify the link to open in a new
window...I think ;-)

I think I have to eat my words;

If I'm at a website and click on a link that brings up a pdf it replaces
what was in the browser window. To get back to the website previously
displayed, I would click on the back arrow.

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't trying to make you eat any words...I
just thought perhaps I was unaware of some setting or something. Oh and by
the way, I find a good pale ale helps me eat my words, but I suppose you
prefer a good Chianti <g>

In practice, I always right click and download pdf files anyway, and even
right click any link and open in a new window or tab when I want to make
sure I don't loose the page I am viewing.

David, the file you reference is for older versions of Publisher. Will this
information work for 2007?

D

DavidF

Yes. While there were changes in Pub 2007, it also produces an 'index.htm'
file and an 'index_files' folder just as Pub 2003 does unless you change the
default settings.
