open a word document in ms word not in ie

how do I get word to open from browser instead of the
document being displayed in IE

Mike,

A couple questions...

1. Are the files your attempting to open htm files? If so,
are you trying to open them from Windows Explorer?

Try opening an instance of Word, and clicking File | Open:
and navigate to the file.
