Open an MS Office file from floppy disk

Dennis

I open a file from floppy disk in MS Office application. If I ejected the
floppy disk before closed the Office application, the Office would hang and
floppy drive running for a long time.

So, do not.

The reason the Office application hangs is that it need access to the source
drive of the file.
Opening and saving Office files directly to removable media can result in
file corruption and/or application failure.
To open a file from removable media, first copy it to your hard drive and
remove any read only attributes.
To save a file to removable media, first save to your hard drive and then
copy the file to the removable media.

Hi Dennis,

When you open a file (in Word for example) temporary
files are created at the location of the open document.
If you remove the media location you can have problems.
In Word 2002/2003 you can use the setting in
Tools=>Options=>Save to [x] Always make a copy...
to reduce problems with diskettes.

If you swap a diskette once a file is open you can
end up with corrupted diskette files or a directory.
Copy the file to the hard drive if possible before
opening.

NEVER work with a file directly from a floppy disk. Always
copy the file to your hard disk and work with it from there.

Working with files that are on floppies is a sure-fire
recipe for disaster.

Hi all,

Thanks for your reply.

I known the best praictise to open a file. However I can't force my user to
follow. Since I have no such problem (Application hang and floppy drive
running for long time) on my PC. I need to known the cause and solution to
fix the problem.

Bob Buckland, I can't find the setting "Tools => Options => Save to [x]"

Many thanks again.

Best Regards,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Unfortunately there is no 'fix' for the user misusing
the diskette beyond encouraging the user to use sound
computing practices. Word writes files to the disk when it
opens the file and uses them to track when its done
with the file. It will hang for about 5 minutes 'waiting'
for the disk to become 'available' again then timeout
(actually it's Windows doing the timing).

My memory was a bit faulty in the last message.
The setting is [x] Make local copy....
under Tools=>Options=>Save. It's somewhat of a workaround
in that it basically copies the file, then opens it then
copies it back to the floppy when its done being edited,
but if the disk is missing... :)
