Open and save .xls Format over the Network

We work with Windows and Mac and Windows SBS 2003.
If I open a file in old xls format of the network, and i save the file, Excel show an error message.
I cannot save the file once more, again an error message.
In the new xlsx format this mistake does not appear.
Also Word and Powerpoint do not show this mistake.

Is there a solution?

but there is a discussion about the problem.
