open any doc causes crash.Word is missing

since getting latest drivers/updates, etc (from microsoft
site) now Word seems corrupted, and I can't locate the
setup.exe file in Explorer. Afraid to re-install in case
it ruins other things, and I'm unsure of which disc to
use, because I have so many. I get confused over
Office2000/2001 (there are files from both in my
computer), and sometimes Word is called Word2000 or
MSWord... am totally confused. I tried using e-diag tools
(from HP for my Vectra 310xe desktop) to see if it's a HD
problem, but it made other things worse. This computer is
getting more slow and hanging so often, the more I try
installing ms fixes and patches for those problems! (Not
able to replace/upgrade it now, unfortunately).
Using Win98 SE and recently added in the Win98Plus! which
is supposed to fix errors, but doesn't do anything. Now
my ScanDisc and DeFrag have started hanging the system,
and task scheduler is unpredictable.
Also cannot locate my config.sys files if I run MsConfig.
