Open bracket before a numbered heading?

In Word 2003, how do you get an open bracket before a numbered heading? I
tried using an advance field code to move the bracket to the left, but the
whole paragraph also moved to the left? What I'm trying to achieve should

1.1 Paragraph text..........
[1.2 Paragraph text, etc., etc., etc.]
1.3 Paragraph text

I can achieve that (when using a heading style) by inserting the following
after the end of the text

If you have a multiline paragraph, you would need to put that field code

### } so that the following text was in the right position.

A bit of juggling of the ### is required to get things in the right place in
both cases
