Open/Convert Dialog Box Disappears after selecting open once

This has been bugging me, and I haven't found any documentation on
this anywhere. When faced with the Open or Convert Dialog when
opening an Access 97 file in Access 2002 (Office XP) and you choose
"OPEN", you do not get the dialog back a second time. Where does this
setting get set in the file?

Is it written to one of the system tables or somewhere else like your
pagesys file? The reason I ask, one of my clients sent a file with an
Access 97 database inside a ZIP file. They do not have a later
version of access. And usually we receive the dialog. But this time
we didn't. Now it is VERY possible that they NOW do have a later
version of Access and opened it before zipping the file.

It's not a big deal, but I don't like NOT KNOWING. Any help would be
appreciated here.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

In simple terms when Access 2000/2002 attempts to open a Access 97 it notes
that there does not exist the system table "MsysAccessObjects" and thereby
you are prompted to open or convert.

After you choose Open the above system table is created.

When the Access 97 user now opens it the above system table remains (it's
not deleted or anything). Then when the 2000/2002 user reopens it being
that the above system table is now there (result of opening in 2000/2002)
you are NOT prompted to Convert/Open.

Now if the Access 97 deletes that above system table you are then prompted
to Convert or Open when opening in 2000/2002 again.

See the following knowledge base article:
How to Suppress the Convert/Open Database Dialog Box When You Open an
Access 97 Database
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824260

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this topic, please
respond back to this posting.
