Open current version files in older versions

Hello,

I need to find out if you can open files made in a newer
version of any office product in an older version. That
is, if I make a Word doc in Office XP can it be opened up
in Word 97 or 2000? I have taken a quick look on the MS
site but wasn't able to come up with anything and I find
that I get answers much faster through the communities.
Thanks for any help.

Default file formats for Office have not changed since Office 97, except
Access (2000) and Outlook (2003).

Some featuers used to create content in later versions will naturally not be
available in earlier versions but you can open up and edit the files fine.
