Open Dialog box hangs word

I upgraded a pc from Win NT to 2000 Pro. It already had
Office XP on the machine. Now everytime the user opens
the Open Dialog box and selects the Look In drop down word
closes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. User getting
fustrated. I tried re-installing to no avail.

Office 97, I believe the same applies in later versions.
