Open Dialog Slow

B

I recently upgraded from NT 4.0 Server to Windows Small Business Server
2003. The default directory on the network for Word documents has over 4000
directories. The Open dialog is extremely slow in Word 2000. I already
tried bumping SizReqBuf to 65535, but that didn't fix the problem. If I
open the network folder in Windows Explorer, it returns the list fast. If I
open the folder in Adobe Reader 7.0, it returns the list in about half a
second. If I open the folder from another workstation that's running Word
2003, it returns the list just as fast. The problem only exists on
computers running Word 2000, and only with Word 2000, since other
applications have no problem listing the directory. I have 21 computers
running Windows 98/Office 2000, five running Windows XP Pro/Office 2000, and
five running Windows XP Pro/Office 2003. The computers that run Office 2003
work flawlessly. On the computers running Windows 98/Office 2000, it takes
about 12 seconds to list the directory. On the computers running Windows XP
Pro/Office 2000, it takes about 30 seconds to list the directory. It's
clearly not a problem with SizReqBuf. The problem didn't exist on the old
NT server. This is really strange, since the new server has over 30 times
the processing power with dual gigabit adapters plugged into a 48 port 3COM
switch, and all of the workstations are communicating at 100Mbps/full
duplex.

Is there some setting that I can turn off in Office 2000 that will fix this
problem? I've already applied all of the service packs and updates in an
attempt to fix this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
