Open Doc problem really a Virus?

R

Rick

When attempting to open a document and navigating to a
folder, not all folders are displayed in the dialog box.
When the window first appears, all folders appear to be
display for an instant before only a limited number of
folders are displays. I have consistently kept anti-virus
software up to date and have repeated scanned drives, as
well as run directly from Norton with no virus' found.
Any ideas or suggestions?

The problem is occurring on a standalone PC not connected
to a network using Office 2000 w/ XP Home. While I
noticed the problem around the time the blaster virus hit,
I am pretty sure the problem was there before this, just
not sure how long.

Thanks!

Hi Rick,

I seem to recall this cropping up in the newsgroups awhile back so I
don't think it's due to a virus. Now what I don't recall is the
resolution - if there was one.

Here are a couple things to try:

- Have you checked the permissions assigned to the folders?
- Recreate the following keys in the Registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Open
Find\Microsoft

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Data

To recreate the keys you can rename them or delete them. As always,
prior to making any changes to the Registry you should review "Backing
up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the Registry Help.

In this situation you may want to use the Registry/Export Registry
file command, export your selected branch, and delete the key. That
way if you find the change wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can
merge the deleted branch back to the Registry by double-clicking the
resulting file.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
