open excel 2004 by default

john.e.palmer

I have Office 2004 and 2008 on my computer. When I double click on a
file in Entourage or elsewhere, it opens Excel 2008, which is a less
than wonderful program. I'd call it a dog, but I like dogs. Anyway,
how do I set default parameters to have a double click open Excel
2004?
Thanks.

Sorry, but there is no "setting" that will accomplish that.

Whether it's OS X, Office, or a combination of the two I don't know but here
is no way [at the user level, anyway] of changing the behavior. The only
workaround I know of is to have the 2004 program running. If it is,
double-clicking a file of that type in a Finder window will open the file in
that version. If 2008 only is running or neither version is running the file
opens in the newer (2008) app.

Its a Bug Ms knows its a Bug. But they are calling it a Feature.

Office2008 is the only applications That exhibit this problem

On all but office2008 you could highlight the file go to get info and
choose the desired application.

You can do this till your blue in the face and the cows jump over the
moon, but the setting does not not take. Its as if Office2008 ignores
the Database system used to determine applications used to open files.

AS Taz say the best method is to either

have 2004 running before double clicking the file.

Open 2004 application first then choose the desire file.

and the is one other way you can try which is almost as easy:

From Finder:

Locate the file you wish to work on.

Highlight it.

From file menu if finder locate *Open File With*

a drop down menu of choices will show up if 2004 shows up click on that
selection if not chose *Other* *.* *.* *.* and locate Excel2004. will
be added to list and will open file.
Sorry, but there is no "setting" that will accomplish that.

Thank you. I had been opening 2004 when I thought of it. Now I'll
just load it on boot up.

The good news is that, for once, the problem wasn't between the
keyboard and the chair. The bad news is that the default can't be
set. 'Feature' my Aunt Fanny! or is that Aunt's fanny?

Makes me love Office 2008 even more.

thanks again for the help.

In case you were wondering about all the asterisks or Stars on each side
of the dots I was attempting to bold fas the dots. evidently dot are
the same as periods and you can't boldface them
