Open Excel problem

Hi All,
I have had Office 2003 Pro on my Computer since day 1 with no problems what
ever.
But, today I tried to open Excel and got an installation type box. Tries to
configure it, but suddenly gets a "fatal error during installation" message.
I have been using Excel for sometime now and have no idea why it would have
started doing this.
I have tried to repair it and in the end even a reinstall Still comes up
with install problem. I've even tried to uninstall Excel but still get the
installation error message. I reckon without trying, that even a complete
Office uninstall / Reinstall would have trouble, but would not want to do
this if I can help it.
Has anybody got any idea's???????????

Hi Mary.
Thanks for the reply, But unfortunately this does not fix the problem. It
will start the detect and repair cycle and do whatever it does and I can use
Excel afterwards. This works with or without the Office Installation Cd
being in the
CR-Rom. The next time I want to use Excel, It does it all over again. It
wouldn't open at all using the Shortcut in the Programs list, so am using a
Shortcut I got from Right clicking the EXE file in the Office directory.
I have tried the reinstall from the CD and from Add/Remove but get
Installation errors.
Looks as if I'm going to have to completely uninstall/reinstall if I can't
get an answer. If I have to do this will I have to Activate the program again
and reinstall all my email settings etc etc, or does it leave all those in
the directory.

Hi,
Don't worry about saving the settings in Office question,I've found out how
to do that.
I've also done a pretty thorough check using Google re the repair option,
but no luck as yet. Getting a hint of the problem being the Microsoft
Installer program.
I'm using XP Pro as my OS, just incase you need to know.

Try this: Move the files in the X:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE11\XLSTART directory to another directory, then start Excel. If
it starts up normally, the problem is one of your add-ins (that you just
moved).

Hi Courtney.
Good idea, but I don't have that directory in my office11 Folder. Ran a
search, but no XLstart listed anywhere.
Thanks for trying.
