open file error in excel

I cannot open excel files in windows explorer any longer. I cannot recall
anything happening before this error. I need to open excel, and then go
through the open menu to open the file.

When I click on the file in explorer, excel does open, just not the file.

Two possible fixes:

1. fix the file references to Excel:

Start, run,

"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver

(quotes mandatory, change the path if needed)

2. Change an option in Excel:

Tools, Options, General, UNCHECK "Ignore other Applications"
