Open file Error

The operating system is XP home edition and has Office
2000. When when clicking either a Excel file or a Word
file to open the file opens fine but gives an error that
the file is already open. Just click ok and the file
goes away. What is causing this problem? How can we
fix it?

Actually if you click ok the file is there and the error
message goes away. If Excel or Word are opened first
then go to open file the file opens as expected and there
are no problems. Most of the files were transfered from
an older computer so the thought it had something to do
with that but that was not the case. We created a new
file and saved it and still did the same thing.

It sounds like the file association needs to be recreated.

Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.
