open file on desktop

At switch on and whenever reverting to the desktop, how can I select a file
or shortcut on it without using the mouse. Onset of RSI so trying to
eliminate mouse activity as much as possible.

Not really a question related to Word, but ...

You can navigate with the arrow keys on the desktop. Good incentive for
a relatively clean desktop, I'd wager.
