Open File Window Not Responding in all Office Components

An Office 2000 Premium installation on a Windows 2K system
will not permit opening files through the Open File Window
which promptly freezes (becomes non-responsive) before you
can specify the file. Existing files can however be opened
by right clicking on their icon and then selecting "open
with". Any suggestions on how to go about correcting this.
I am about to uninstall and reinstall all office
components to try solving this problem.
