Open Link in word to excel object goes to the wrong cell

I am working in office 2003. In word I perform "insert>object>microsoft excel
worksheet" and check the box "display as icon".

Then I paste several cells from the worksheet into the word document using
"paste special>formatted text (RTF)" and check the "paste link" radio button.

When I perform "open link" from word I find myself in the excel worksheet
BUT in the wrong cell even though the value in the word document remains
correct.

Any ideas or workarounds ?

By the way in word 95 it worked fine.
