Open new document overtop the original document

In order to keep track of my productivity at my job I use consecutive Word
documents. In the past I had been able to do Ctrl N for new document and the
document would appear directly overtop the prior. Now it tiles and I can't
find a fix. I've been in the hospital for an extended stay and can't remember
how to do this. Can anyone help?

Tools > options > general > check 'windows in task bar' (There's a similar
option in Word 2007 > Word Options > Advanced).
