open or closing files in office

I have been using office professional 2003 for years.

An Issue has developed today

when i use an office program re word excel publisher and click on open or
close a program the dialog box of availabe drives comes up fine but when I
click on the locaton on the top to change drives / location if states "not
responding" and the hour glass stays up for 60+ seconds and finally will
finish. This does not happen with non office products.

Any thoughts

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop, left-click
