open pst files seperate from personal folders?

Am able to "import" old pst files into 2007 Outlook, but only as a folder
within my "personal folders". In the past I was able to access archived
2000/2002 pst files stored on a network or other drive and could open or
close these files at will. I do understand that 2007 uses a different file
format that must be "imported" but would still like to find a way to convert
the archived files and have them available on another drive for review by
"opening" and closing them from within Outlook 2007. (its too messy and
arduous to keep track and do backups from within my current personal
folders). I used to be able to do this in an earlier version but in 2007 the
only option is to open an "Outlook Data File" which doesn't allow me to
access the old pst files. Hope someone understands what I'm trying to do and
can help. Thank-you.

No "conversion" necessary. You can open any PST file you want in Outlook
2007. Explain why you cannot.
