Open same document by multiple users?

Hello; we have a network of two imacs running OSX. We have Office 2004
on both of them. If there is a file that both of us want to use, and
one of us has it
open, if the other person then opens the file, it doesn't open as a
"read
only" as it would in Windows. The result is that then when the second
person goes to save, we have issues.

Is there a way to somehow get around this by either telling Mac to give
us a
warning that the file is open elsewhere? This must be a common problem
on
networks, how do others deal with it?

Thanks!

Hi,

Is it a Windows based network? Then use an appropriate product from Thursby
<http://www.thursby.com/>

Excel workbooks can be opened simultaneously by multiple users if Tools >
Sharing is enabled in the workbooks. Other file types can be opened only by
one person at a time and can be corrupted easily if more than one person at
a time has read and write capability.
