open & save problems

everytime i try to open or save as a file, when i click on browse to find the
folder i want, it says inatillazing the root folders to display and it takes
a while. it used to not do this at all. now it sometimes freezes up when i
try to open or save. do i have a setting wrong or need to download a service
pack?
