Open Visio 2003 doc with Visio 2000

Don Hayden

We had a consultant in our group who created some Visio
2003 docs for us. Our company standard is Visio 2000. I am
being told that these docs cannot be opened with Visio
2000. Is this true, and if so, how can I open these docs
with Visio 2000? Your reply would be most appreciated, as
I am getting sick of listening to everyone's whinning here.
Thanks.

they cannot be opened in v2000. If you really need to view them you can use
the viewer.

Solution

Yes...save it as a lower version. I'm using version 2005,
but save it as a lower version to use it in the office.

Two things:

1) Have the consultant save the files as Visio 2002/Visio 2000 files (The
file format is the same)
2) If you have Visio 2000 SR1, consider upgrading in the next year.
Currently Visio 2000 SR1 is the oldest version of Visio that qualifies for
an upgrade. Microsoft acquired Visio after Visio 2000 was released and
shortly after released SR1. SR1 fixed a number of problems with Visio 2000,
but the main component was adding Micorsoft branding to the product. So the
oldest version of Visio that qualifies for an update is the version first
released by Microsoft or the last version of Visio released by Visio with
the free SR1 patch applied (Unfortunately, the patch is no longer available)

The current version of Visio is Visio 2003 and the next version is in
development. The release date is at least a year away. If you like to
gamble; in the past when a new version was released, anyone upgrading to the
current version (before the release) with in a month or two of the release
date would get a free upgrade to the new version. Even those who would
qualify for the old version, but not the new version were eligible. There is
no guarantee that this will happen again.
