Open Word 2007 from Windows Explorer

When I try to open a Word doc from Explorer, it opens VERY slowly and
sometimes not at all. If I open Word first and then use Open from the Office
button it opens faster, although still much slower than in 2003.

There are many links to Excel in this file, but I have turned off Office
Button - Word Options - Advanced - Update automatic links at open.

Suggestions?
