Opening 2004 Excel documents in Office 2008

When I try to open an excel document created with Mac Office 2004 in Office 2008, I get a message 'DocumentName.xls cannot be accessed.' I can open the document with Office 2004 without a problem. This happens with multiple documents and I have tried re-saving the documents from 2004 without any luck. Thanks.
