opening a doc

why is it that sometimes opening a document in word97
takes 2-3minutes? last week i decided to reformat the hdd
and install everything, but the problem is still there.
most of the time it opens normally. sometimes it takes
awhile. is it still a software issue or a hardware
problem?

Reformating and re-installation is a very very drastic step and if you
did it to fix this problem ... well, it's drastic.

Comments:

1. loading from local disk or a file server?
2. is virus-checking of the files on opening turned on, and does the
problem go away when virus-checking turned off? (I don't recommend not
using virus-checking ... this just a test to see if it's the root cause).
3. are some files huge and other files small
4. the the same file take the same amount of time, excessive or otherwise?
5. might be a hard disk or hard disk controller problem.

Also, is the folder compressed, and the time taken is to un-compress the
files?
