I can open .docx files in Word for MAC 2008, but I cannot open a MS Word 2003 .doc file. What gives

I'm afraid nobody here has any more of a clue than you do if you don't
provide sufficient information, such as:

Where are the files stored?
Where were they created - PC, Mac? By which version of Word?
If from another source, how were they transported?
How are you attempting to open them?
What - specifically - happens when you try?
Which version of OS X, type of Mac?

Also, the body content of your message indicates *.doc* but your Subject
line refers to *.dot* - What gives?:)

I have a MAC Pro (INTEL) OS 10.5.2 Leopard.

I had MS office student old version and upgraded to MS office standard 2008. I downloaded a MS .doc document created in MS windows onto the MAC desktop, then double click on document a I get "word cannot open this document, it may be in use or may be a invalid word document. The document opens fine in Windows XP/Wood 2007.

When I go to MAC word 2008 and try to open the desktop .doc from the open command in Word 2008, it gives the same message. File was created in Win XP winword 2003 in .doc format.

Hi Rudi:

The document contains "something" that Mac Word can't read. It may be, for
example, a Visio drawing.

Hope this helps
