OPENING A FILE

When I try to open a word document it takes about 30 seconds to respond then the entire screen looks like a spread sheet with only vertical lines. When I try to close it there is no response. I have dumped the program 2x and reloaded it but get the same result.

I'm afraid "dumping" the program is one of the worst things you can do. It's
rarely the software that causes a problem & reinstalling doesn't correct the
support files that are possibly the source of the issue. It just gets the
Office components out of synch with each other & can create more problems.

Before taking any further steps, though, you need to specify exactly what
version of Office & OS X you're currently at - "2004" & "10.5" is too vague.

Information about your Mac might also be helpful.

How are you opening the file ? Double-Click, File> Open?

Also, does this happen with *all* documents or just one in particular? How
about if you just launch Word so it creates a new blank document? Is it a
file you created yourself or is it from another source? What is the file
format - .doc, .docx, .rtf ?

Have you tried using Word from a different User Account?

Are you having similar issues with other programs?

Can you open the file in question with TextEdit?

What other details can you provide?
