opening a mac 2008 excel file in windows xp

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

I've created an excel file in office for mac 2008 and when I emailed it to a colleague who uses windows xp, the attachment shows file type as "application/octet-stream" and offers to save it. When trying to save it, the file download window offers to save it as a winzip file. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks.
