Opening a template as an untitled document

I have a very basic question I¹ve never been able to answer. How can I open
a template as an untitled document, other than by using the Project Gallery
³New² tab in Word? I¹d love to be able to do this faster than the
multi-step ³Command-Shift-P, click ³New², click on a folder (and sometimes a
subfolder), click on a template, hit return².

Thanks for any help.

Hi Ken,

Unfortunately, there is no built-in way, and I *strongly* encourage you to
use Help | Send Feedback in Word and request a built-in one-click way to
open a document based on a template, just send them your exact post. I have
requested this, so additional requests might help move it up the priority
list.

However, you can build your own one-click access easily enough.

First, you need to record a macro of yourself doing those multiple steps via
the Project Gallery. If you have never recorded a macro, check Help "record
a macro", it gives the steps fine.

Once the macro exists, then you need to assign it to a keyboard shortcut or
put it on a toolbar. (You might test it first, via Tools | Macros [select]
Run, make sure it works fine, but it will).
See Help topics, "Add a toolbar button to run a macro from" or "Customize
shortcut key assignments", or see the second half of this webpage:
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/PasteText.html
(under Make the Macros Easy to Use)

Hope that helps,

Thank you, Daiya, I had a feeling this was the case. I am sending a message
to Microsoft, as this seems so fundamental to me. I¹ll try creating a
macro, but I¹ve had little luck with that function, it¹s very limited.
Luckily, one of my sons knows how to program in VBA, so I might try to get
him to do the macro for me. Thanks again.

Hi Ken,

You don't need to know how to program. Just record the macro--all you have
to do is hit start, stop, and give it a name. Sometimes the recorder messes
up, but this will be fine.

Check the Help topic on "record a macro"--I think it might have nice little
diagrams to clarify.

(No, you shouldn't have to do this, but it really should be fine if you give
it a try :)
