opening a template (.dot) error

I am encountering this error message, "there is not enough memory or
disk space to there is insufficient memory or disk space. close extra
windows and save your work." i know it looks like a typo but it is
not. my machine has 9gigs of free space with 512 ram (xp machine) .
any ideas.

I too get this error when opening a .dot file which was created with Word 97.
I tried with word versions: 10.2627.3311 and 10.6612.6714.
This error is encountered when trying to create a new document from the
template, but it works ok when editing the template itself.
I have tried to save the template again from the two word versions staded
above with no luck.
